We take pride in our excellent safety record. All of our trips operate under ridged safety guidelines and procedures. We take great care to manage the risk associated with the experiences that we provide. Participants should however understand that there is risk inherent in out door adventure experiences and you may find yourself participating in activities and exposed to risk that is not part of your daily life. It is important to understand the physical expectations of the trip that you are joining and that you clearly discuss any concerns or physical limitations that you may have before committing to a particular trip. Each participant is required to fill out a medical history form and sign an assumption of risk statement. In some instances we require a doctors signature acknowledging that the individual is appropriate for the physical demands of the trip.
Many of our trips take place in remote wilderness areas. Depending on the trip we carry cell phone, satellite phone, or VHF radio. All coastal trips in addition to a cell phone also carry an (EPIRB) Emergency Positioning Radio Beacon and all Canadian trips carry an (ELT) Emergency Locator Transmitter. Although we carry these emergency communication devices there are times when even these can fail and participants should be aware that possibility. In the event of an emergency even given the best communication help may be hours and in some cases days away.
One of the expectations when entering into remote regions is that a positive attitude is required as is the understanding that ones individual actions can impact the well being of the entire group. It is important to be a team player and understand that in the end the natural world has the final word on all trip decisions.
Registered Maine Guides or Maine State Trip Leaders lead all trips. Our lead instructors hold certifications in Wilderness First Responder First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. We take the responsibility of trip leading seriously and during the course of the year staff are required to participate in periodic skill trainings.
