West Branch Whitewater (ages 14-17)
Three-Week
One of the most spectacular rivers in the East, the West Branch of the Penobscot drops 120 feet per mile and offers everything from the most challenging to the most gentle of rapids – an outstanding river for learning and perfecting whitewater skills. An extensive series of dams provides a steady flow of warm water throughout the summer.
Participants will set up a base camp at Chewonki’s Big Eddy Campground and spend their days exploring the river’s calm pools and whitewater. Appropriate for beginners, a progression of instruction will enable trippers to challenge themselves while learning safe paddling techniques. Learning about the human and natural history of the region, a day hike of nearby Katahdin and a service project along the river create a well-rounded outdoor experience.

Umbagog Whitewater (ages 14-17)
Note: This program is fully enrolled for Session II Summer 2008. There are still openings in Umbagog Whitewater Session I.
Three-Week
Based at Sunday Cove on Lake Umbagog in western Maine, this three-week program offers direct access to the outstanding whitewater of the Rapid River. This trip is for individuals who have a strong desire to learn and master their whitewater kayaking skills. The group will live at a permanent campsite, where woodcraft and canoeing skills will also be developed. Early instruction will take place on the lake; as skills improve, the group will move to the more challenging whitewater on the Rapid River.

Northeast Rivers (ages 15-18)
Five-Week
North East Rivers is a five-week, invitational trip for advanced whitewater kayakers. Applicants must have previous whitewater kayaking experience or have participated in our Umbagog or West Branch whitewater programs. Participants on this five-week experience travel by van hauling a trailer with kayaks as they seek the finest whitewater runs in the Northeast. The journey will begin in Maine and continue through New Hampshire, Vermont, upstate New York and then north to Ontario and Quebec before returning to Chewonki Neck.
