Mariners Sail (ages 14–17)
Three-Week
In 1980 Chewonki built and launched two traditional pulling boats: a Crotch Island Pinky (from designs of boats originally built on the islands of Casco Bay, Maine) and a Mackinaw (from designs of Upper Lake Michigan fishing boats). We spend three weeks sailing and rowing the coast from Wiscasset down east to Mount Desert Island and beyond, camping on islands along the way. The natural history of the coast and intertidal regions, as well as the maritime history of the islands, are the “stuff" of this adventure.
Renewable Energy Sail (ages 13–15)
One-Week
Adventure
Join us for 8 days of fun, sailing, science, and camping
as we learn about climate change and study the sunshine
and wind that we use to make our electricity and cook our
food. Participants spend the first few days at Chewonki,
where they build personal photovoltaic modules to charge
their batteries and a solar cooker, both of which they
take home. We then head off for a three-day sail along
the Maine Coast where we use our skills and equipment for
learning and adventure.
