Winter is a special time for biological inquiry and adventure. Animal tracks abound, and life thrives above and below the snow. Reached on snowshoes or skis, Chewonki’s outpost camp on Big Wood Pond in northwest Maine is a comfortable and scenic place for winter learning. Students lodge in our cabin and wood-heated canvas yurts along the shore of beautiful Wood Pond. Many miles of ski-able trails surround our property. A winter ascent of nearby Sally Mountain provides a memorable day trip.
A more challenging option is a journey skiing or walking along the lakes of northern Maine pulling a sled with food and gear. Evenings around the campsite are enjoyed in our wood-heated, canvas wall tents.
