Our Approach
Discovering remote natural areas in small, self-contained groups is for many students "the ultimate experience." Traveling and living in the backcountry, working on the very real challenges of a wilderness trip, students are removed from the comfort of their dependable routine and are challenged to develop leadership skills and increase their self-esteem. Exploring group dynamics becomes a very practical goal as the success of the trip clearly depends on the development of a healthy human community. Immersed in areas of stunning beauty, students are inspired to embrace the study of natural history. They often develop personal and enduring connections to some of the last remnants of wilderness in the Northeast.

Our Experience
For more than 90 years, Chewonki has provided educational wilderness experiences for children. Our leaders are skilled wilderness travelers and educators whose training in safety and leadership is respected throughout the country. Their certifications include Maine State Trip Leader, Lifeguard Certification, and Wilderness First Responder.

Customize
Each trip is custom designed. The duration, location, intensity, and focus are all tailored to the student group. A group may choose to travel a long distance, with traveling and camping as their main focus, or to travel short distances with layover days to allow for the study of natural and cultural history. No previous experience is necessary.

My trip was great because I had a lot of friends in my group, and the people who I didn't know at the beginning of the trip were friends by the end.
