Teambuilding through “challenge education” is an exciting way of discovering and using human potential. Chewonki offers nine teambuilding opportunities, each with its own particular focus. Each challenge is followed by a “debriefing,” in which the group discusses such topics such as communication, leadership, gender issues, peer pressure, tolerance and accountability. Teambuilding exercises offer students a striking new awareness of their own personal capabilities, allowing them to grow beyond their accepted role in the group and encouraging genuine concern for the well being of others.

teambuildingGroup Challenges
This is the core of our teambuilding curriculum. Students work through a series of problem-solving tasks designed to develop teamwork, decision-making, and creative problem-solving. The challenge may be a physical one, like getting your whole group through a spider web without touching the web, or a mental challenge, like figuring out how to move a bucket filled with tennis balls with limited tools and numerous restrictions. The lessons promote individual self-esteem and leadership skills through supportive, positive encouragement.

teambuildingThe Wild Goose Chase
This is a low-ropes obstacle course that takes students on a “wild goose chase” through Chewonki’s forest management zone. The lesson combines challenge education and sustainable land-use issues as students learn about Chewonki’s land-use plan and see firsthand our forest management practices. Students encounter challenges along the trail and discover the value of careful planning, trust, and listening skills.

barn climbThe Barn Climb
This indoor ropes course is situated in our 19th-century barn. Students wear helmets and climbing harnesses and are hooked into safety lines at all times. The barn climb helps students discover their inner reserves of strength and become comfortable with identifying risks and accepting new challenges. Students work in pairs, supporting one another, giving encouragement, and developing effective communication skills.

gulchThe Gulch Crossing

This is a unique and intricate problem-solving challenge combined with a thrilling Tyrolean traverse across a 30-foot tidal ravine. Requiring the involvement of every member of the group, this activity is as rewarding as it is challenging. It is also an experience that most participants never forget!

mapcompassMap and Compass

This lesson begins with a brief discussion of the relevance and value of maps, charts, and topography. Participants then learn to read and navigate by compass, integrating many aspects of natural science with personal and group challenge. The lesson culminates with small groups orienteering on Chewonki Neck on courses of their own design.

rock climbThe Rock Climb

This is an excellent blend of individual and group challenge. Climbing and rappelling on a small cliff along our scenic shoreline, participants discover ways to leave behind their own perceived limitations. With direct responsibility for their own and each other's safety, students gain a great sense of pride in their capabilities.

service projectService Learning Projects
These projects encourage an awareness of the needs of others, demonstrating an individual's ability to contribute to a larger community, and clearly illustrating the power of a group's focused, collective effort. Often originating on our organic farm or in our woodlot, service learning projects are satisfying physical experiences that provide an introduction to the world of actual challenge.

canoe
Canoeing

This program offers a unique opportunity for teamwork as partners work together to navigate the tidal marshes, creeks, and bays surrounding Chewonki Neck. The lesson includes instruction in basic paddle strokes, canoe safety, and rescue procedures

camdenCamden Hills Hike
Students learn leadership skills and teamwork as they explore the hiking trails of Camden Hills State Park. Within an hour’s drive of Chewonki this beautiful park offers spectacular views of Penobscot Bay and the rugged Maine Coast.
