The freshwater lakes and rivers of inland Maine are highways of discovery. Paddling through the varied landscape, students may encounter evidence of old-time log drives or modern hydropower projects, and they may be fortunate to see loons, otters, and eagles. Rivers like the St. Croix and the Allagash provide comfortable settings for learning basic whitewater skills, and lake chains throughout the state allow for serene yet challenging paddling. Chewonki’s remote outposts on Wood Pond in Attean Township, Maine, near Jackman, and Lake Umbagog in Errol, on the Maine/New Hampshire border, offer base camps for day tripping.
