Scott Andrews Fund Reaches Goal

We are delighted to announce the realization of the Scott Andrews Challenge Grant. The endowed fund was created in 2003 to honor Scott Andrews' sixteen years as director of the Maine Coast Semester. Once the fund reached its first hurdle of $250,000, the MCS family that provided a stunning lead gift matched every additional pledge dollar for dollar, until we met our ultimate goal of $500,000. “The fulfillment of this challenge grant marks a great achievement for Chewonki and is a tribute to Scott’s tremendous contribution to this place,” said Lucy Hull, Director of Development for Chewonki. There are many wonderful stories behind the fulfillment of this goal, including the departing class of MCS students who announced they had achieved 100 percent participation in giving to the fund, and asked other MCS classes to do the same. Every gift honored Scott, and the fund now supports MCS faculty members who have made teaching their life’s work. In 2005 Amy Rogers, our long-time MCS faculty member, was the first faculty member able to benefit from the fund by taking a sabbatical.

Chewonki Receives Remarkable Leadership Pledge

We have received a remarkable leadership pledge of $250,000 from the Rodman family toward the fund established for their son, Matthew, who passed away
in 1999. This commitment will ensure that the fund will continue to support several campers each summer for many years to come. This past summer, thanks to generous contributions over the past six years, Chewonki was able to name its first Rodman Camp Scholarship recipient. Fifteen-year-old Zack is from Portland, Maine, and had never been to Chewonki before. He arrived for the second session of the Osprey in-camp program, and went on a six-day whitewater kayaking trip as part of his camp experience. Clearly it was a powerful time for him, and Matthew’s Fund made it possible. Matt’s love of and enthusiasm for Chewonki is indeed alive and well and manifest in appreciative campers like Zack.

Quimby Family Foundation Gift

In August 2006, The Quimby Family Foundation of Portland, Maine, called to announce that Chewonki’s request for two years of funding for the development of additional girls programs had been accepted. The Quimby grant provides key support for the creation of a Girls Program Director position at Chewonki. “This is a very exciting moment in our history,” said Don Hudson upon hearing of the gift. “Chewonki’s board of trustees and staff have long dreamed of expanding our offerings for young women and girls. This position marks the official realization of that dream.” This is an exciting new direction for Chewonki and a much needed and timely resource for teenage girls from Maine and beyond. Many thanks to the Quimby Family Foundation.

Software Update

The staff of the Development Office has been busy converting data to a new software system. The Raiser's Edge by Blackbaud is touted by many of our colleague organizations as a fine tool for keeping track of information. We appreciate your patience as we convert to this new system and ask that you please contact us with any irregularities noticed with our mailings.
