Chewonki is a charter member of Maine Green Power Connection, a growing network of businesses, organizations, and residents who are working together to create a viable market for greener electric power in Maine.

The Earth Charter

On May 11, 2002, The Chewonki Foundation Board of Trustees unanimously voted to adopt the Earth Charter, a declaration of fundamental principles for a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the twenty-first century. In addition, Chewonki was the proud sponsor of an academic symposium, Teaching for the Environment in Higher Education, The Promise of the Earth Charter, held at Chewonki the same year.

Green Campus Consortium of Maine

Chewonki is a charter member of this dynamic group of Maine colleges and universities that are working hard to make their campuses more environmentally friendly.

Maine Green House Gas Initiative

In June 2003, the Maine State Legislature passed a bill charging the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) with developing an action plan with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from state sources. The Chewonki Foundation was part of the thirty-member Stakeholder Advisory Group whose purpose was to advise the DEP on how best to meet the required emissions reductions of 1990 levels by 2010.
