Our idea of good work goes beyond the classroom. Indeed, work is a vital and exhilarating part of the Maine Coast Semester experience. We all—students and faculty—work together to maintain the campus. We strive for excellence, whether painting a boat, raising the wall for a new building, or sweeping the kitchen. Through work we illuminate the connections between different parts of our lives. Planting on the farm puts potatoes on the dinner table; cutting wood from our woodlot allows us to heat our cabins. Mopping the dining room floor expresses our care for our home. By experiencing a range of work, our academic pursuits are made richer; thought and action are connected.
In this spirit, students and faculty participate together in small crews to sustain our community. Each job is integral and necessary for the Maine Coast Semester to operate. Students spend two afternoons a week involved in the work program. Experience is gained on the job and students learn lifelong skills. The rewards of good work, well done, are accompanied by the satisfaction of learning new skills and the companionship that comes from working with others to accomplish a task.
