Our campus is a vast 400-acre peninsula located on the shoreline of Midcoast Maine. The property is situated in a protected tidal inlet located several miles upriver from the mouths of the Kennebec and Sheepscot rivers. The land supports a diverse array of ecosystems including fields, forest, rocky coast, salt marsh, pond and farmland – a rich tapestry for experience and learning.
Trails
Over five miles of trails connect campsites, scenic points, and historical features on Chewonki Neck. Students are encouraged to explore their home on foot, by snowshoe, or on skis during free periods and on weekends throughout the semester. Nearby, other Chewonki lands offer additional miles of hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
Waterfront
Our campus is surrounded by three and a half miles of stunning coastline. Our waterfront is situated within two hundred yards of our central Quad, with facilities for supervised swimming and boating. After instruction and safety training, fall semester students canoe and kayak along Montsweag Bay from our saltmarsh to open water. Although cold weather puts an end to most waterfront activities, there is a strong “polar bear” tradition that keeps us testing the waters clear through the winter! Although boating from the waterfront is rarely possible in the spring semester, we do try to paddle a local river during spring high water.
