Chewonki seeks students who are looking for an exciting and challenging experience, who are thriving at their own school, and who are ready to seek new ways of learning for themselves and new ways to contribute to others. Chewonki is not for the unmotivated student. Indeed, students who enroll here are self-directed, motivated, enthusiastic, and joyful.
We accept applications from high school sophomores for the fall or spring of their junior year, and each semester about 40 students enroll. Typically, one-third of our students come from our fourteen member schools, the original sponsors of the program. The remaining two-thirds come from nonmember independent schools (boarding and day) and public schools from across the country.
Admissions criteria include personal essays, academic records, two teacher recommendations, and most importantly, a clear indication of the student’s desire to participate. We seek students who want an intellectually challenging academic experience and who love learning.
