Where is the Girls Camp?
Camp Chewonki for Girls will open in the summer of 2008 on Fourth Debsconeag Lake. Fourth Debsconeag Lake is in the heart of the Maine Woods, surrounded by 90,000 acres of conservation lands owned by the state and The Nature Conservancy, and just 12 miles south as the crow flies from the West Branch of the Penobscot River and Our Big Eddy Campground. The Appalachian Mountain Club owns and manages 50,000 acres just south of the Debsconeags in the 100-mile wilderness, and more than 500,000 acres of Baxter State Park and adjoining conservation lands are to the north.

What is the staff to camper ratio?
Our staff to camper ratio is one staff to every three campers.
How many kids are in a cabin?
Six to ten campers live in a rustic summer cabin/yurt with two trip leaders.

What are the in-camp activities?
Art, Camp craft, canoeing, hiking, nature study, Renewable Energy workshops, swimming, natural history, woodworking, paddle-making, with informal singing, dancing, dreaming. To find out more about in-camp activities, view the Program section of our website.
What training is required of the leaders?
All of our staff is required to have Wilderness First Responder, First Aid and CPR training, and Lifeguard Training certification and undergo two weeks of intensive staff training at Chewonki prior to the start of camp. All of our wilderness trip leaders have their Wilderness First Responder and Lifeguard Training certification, and many are year-round teachers for our Environmental Education program.
