At Chewonki, we plan our meals to be as healthy, well-balanced and as camper-delicious as possible. We hope that campers will learn to like a few new foods, but we also want kids to be reassured by familiar standbys. Vegetarian and vegan options are available at every meal and food allergies are accommodated. Nearly all of the meals in camp are made from scratch, using healthy, fresh ingredients. Campers love our food and often return with stories of their delicious meals.

Campers will enjoy meals both in Chewonki’s dining hall on Fourth Debsconeag as well as meals prepared in the field. Meals at camp will be prepared by our kitchen staff with the help of campers and trip leaders.  Meals out on trail will be prepared by trip leaders and campers.

Breakfasts may include cereal and fruit followed by an entrée of either eggs, pancakes, French toast or coffee cake. Lunches feature a salad or vegetable, fresh Chewonki made bread and an entrée ranging from casseroles, beef or vegetable stew, cold cut sandwiches, and a fruit dessert. Suppers include bread and vegetables along with burritos, pizza, macaroni and cheese, or stir-fried vegetables & rice followed by a sweet dessert such as brownies or rice-krispie treats.

At least two staff members are assigned to a table to help facilitate the meal. We enter the dinning hall together quietly and wait to start the meal until we share a reading or song that focuses on community, the natural world or personal growth. At this point, everyone takes their seats and the staff serve the food family-style.
