Chewonki requires no prior experience for our programs. However, we do require that everyone participates fully and that they agree to be physically active and motivated. Our staff works closely with each participant to ensure they are capable and comfortable to travel and live safely in the wilderness.

We recommend that campers prepare themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically. From climbing to the top of a mountain, to paddling for 6 hours on lakes and rivers, to carrying your belongings on your back, by the end of the day, your muscles and mind will be physically exerted and tired! To ensure a successful experience, we highly encourage participants to think about these challenges beforehand, and prepare appropriately. Here are some ways you might prepare for your journey:

  • Regular exercise (walking, running, biking, dancing, swimming, etc)
  • Researching and becoming familiar with the location of your journey (looking at the maps, rivers, mountains, and other sites you might see)
  • Talking to past participants about their experiences
  • Setting 3 goals for yourself at camp.
  • Most of all, we hope you'll prepare for a great and enrichening experience!
