Each summer campers and trippers travel to Chewonki from as close as Wiscasset, Maine and from as far away as Tokyo, Japan. Chewonki staff meet flights and accompany groups from New York, Boston, and Portland (many campers travel by car). Flights are met from all over the country before 1:00 pm in Boston on opening day. International and West Coast campers sometimes arrive in Boston a day early. In this case, arrangements may be made for early pick-up at the airport, or for campers to be hosted by a camp family.

Camp and Trip Travel

Our travel form is available online each spring, in addition to being included in the pre-camp packet. Please fill out this form and return to us by June 1 so our leadership staff know how you will be arriving at Chewonki for your summer program, whether you will be arriving by train, plane, bus or car!

Click here for the most up-to-date TSA security regulations if your child is traveling by plane.

The following are our tips for your child's safe travel to Chewonki this summer, if they are traveling by Chewonki van or bus:

  • Parents should wait with their camper at the drop-off point for chartered vans and buses until the vehicle has arrived and the chaperones account for all participants.
  • All passengers must wear seatbelts while the vehicle is in motion. A seatbelt check will be done before the trip begins and periodically throughout the trip.
  • Passengers should remain seated and keep arms, hands, and head inside the vehicle at all times.
  • Along the roadside, passengers should enter and exit from vehicles onto the shoulder and never into traffic.
  • During refueling or rest stops, participants will be well supervised according to Chewonki's usual procedures and staffing ratios.
  • All passengers on rented buses will follow the instructions of the driver. All of Chewonki's vehicle safety policies apply.
