Our campers are very active and need a well balanced diet to fuel their busy days. We carefully plan our meals to be as camper friendly as possible. We hope that campers will learn to like a few new foods, but we also want kids to be reassured by familiar standbys. Vegetarian and vegan options are available at every meal and food allergies are accommodated. Nearly all of the meals are made from scratch in our kitchen using as many fresh ingredients from our farm as the season allows.
Breakfasts feature a cereal and fruit followed by an entrée of either eggs, pancakes, French toast or coffee cake. Lunches feature a salad or vegetable, fresh Chewonki made bread and an entrée ranging from casseroles, beef or vegetable stew, cold cut sandwiches, and a fruit dessert. Suppers include bread and vegetables along with burritos, pizza, macaroni and cheese, stir-fried vegetables & rice followed by a sweet dessert such as brownies or rice-krispie treats. Campers love our food!
As a camp, we spent nearly three hours a day in our dinning hall for meals and community announcements.
At least two staff members are assigned to a table to help facilitate the meal. Every four or five days, campers draw numbers for their table assignment rather than sit by cabin group. This mixed seating approach allows for campers of different ages to get to know each other, as well an opportunity for staff to interact with a wider group of campers. We enter the dinning hall together quietly and wait to start the meal until we share a reading or song that focuses on community, the natural world or personal growth. At this point, everyone takes their seats and the counselors serve the food family-style.
