Chewonki takes every possible precaution to ensure the health and safety of its participants. During the summer our healthcare coordinators, Joanna Fernald and Eric Duffy, are joined by registered nurses in the infirmary. Much energy is devoted to prevention of illness and injury and early identification and treatment of minor problems. We will inform you of any necessary physician visit, overnight in the infirmary, or removal of your child from a trip. A physical examination, including up-to-date tetanus and TB tests, is required prior to attending camp. The Health Form should be completed and returned by May 1. All medications, including prescription, non-prescription, and vitamins, are kept in the infirmary or first aid kit and dispensed by the nurses or wilderness trip leaders at mealtimes. Please notify us in advance of any special health circumstances.
Wilderness First responder and Life Guard Training is required of all wilderness trip leaders. The Chewonki Foundation takes great pride in our excellent safety record. All our trips operate under rigid safety guidelines and procedures. Many of our trips take place in remote or wilderness areas. Participants and their parents should be aware of the risk inherent in outdoor adventure programs. Our healthcare staff's primary goal is to keep all campers and trippers healthy, happy, and safe!
