For some campers, the most memorable part of their Chewonki experience is the wilderness trip they take with their cabin mates. Every three-and-a-half-week or seven-week camper participates in at least one of these trips, which range in length from two days for the youngest campers to about ten days for older boys. Our ten-day campers participate in a cabin overnight at one of our waterfront campsites.
Using the camping skills they have gained through their woodcraft training, campers travel to remote parts of Maine for an adventure that may include hiking mountains and canoeing on inland rivers and lakes or sailing or kayaking on the coast. In the wilderness, in close contact with nature and their companions, campers learn to distinguish between what is meaningful and essential in life and what may be superfluous.
