Chewonki offers
formalized instruction in several diverse activities: nature,
campcraft, canoeing, sailing, kayaking, art, pottery, swimming,
tennis, field sports, archery, farm and organic gardening, woodworking,
renewable energy workshops, and photography. Special emphasis
is given to natural history and ecology, in addition to wilderness
canoeing, hiking, and sailing trips. Sailing races, skit nights,
carnivals, scavenger hunts, evening dips, discussion groups,
campfires, folk singing, star gazing, rock climbing, chess and
checkers, drama, and many other events and activities unique
to each summer help to round out the program.
Cabin Groups
Chewonki offers three-and-a-half week and seven-week camp sessions, as well as a special ten-day introductory program for 8- to 11-year-olds. Puffins, Owls, Herons and Ospreys are assigned to cabins based on their age and grade in school, with six to ten campers and two counselors. Cabin groups take overnights and wilderness trips together and offer contributions to campfires, talent shows, and other special events. As Chewonki attracts a wide cross-section of young people, working toward becoming a cohesive cabin unit is an important part of the camp experience. Cabin groups work together in a variety of ways--squads, dining hall responsibilities, and cabin clean-ups to name a few.
