Don Hudson is the president of the foundation and has had a long association with Chewonki as camper, counselor, trip leader, and assistant director. Don graduated from Dartmouth College in 1972 and received his doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from Indiana University in 1983. His wife, Phine Ewing, is an artist and botanical illustrator. Don and Phine have two sons, Charlie and Reuben.
Garth Altenburg is Chewonki's fifth boys' camp director and has a long history with Chewonki starting in 1988, when he participated in the Mistissini Canoe Expedition. He received his B.S. in elementary education from Skidmore College in 1995, and his master's degree from the University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service. Garth is president-elect of the Maine Youth Camp Foundation and serves on the board of the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust. He and his wife Heather have three children: William, Benjamin and Phoebe.
Betta Stothart Connor, has been Chewonki's Director of Communications since 2002. Betta started her career as a journalist at Maine Times, after which she was marketing director at Fresh Samantha Juices and then at Wolfe's Neck Farm, where she helped develop an all-natural beef program. She studied writing and literature at Sarah Lawrence College, where she graduated in 1987. Betta is married to Eric Connor. They have a daughter Beatrix.
Lucy Hull, director of development, has been at Chewonki since 1997. When not in the office, she can be found hiking, biking, skiing, sailing, kayaking or traveling with husband Bart Chapin. In a former life she built and restored boats, constructed houses and worked as a veterinary technician. Lucy graduated from Bennington College in 1975 with a B.A. in psychology. Lucy’s children, Margaret and Miles Chapin, have enjoyed many Chewonki programs as both participants and leaders.
Willard Morgan is head of school for Chewonki Semester School. While at Williams College, he conducted field research as part of his major in Geosciences. After a number of years working in the mountains for Outward Bound and other organizations, Willard resumed his studies in the Field Naturalist Program at the University of Vermont, where he earned a master's degree. Before coming to Chewonki, he directed the Williams College Outing Club and served as a lecturer in the Rubenstein School of environment and natural resources at UVM. At Chewonki, Willard teaches Environmental Issues and coordinates work program. He continues to study and explore the natural world on adventures with his wife, Jenn Barton, and their young daughter, Sierra.
Chris Riley has been on the Chewonki staff since 1997, when he came here as an environmental educator and wilderness trip leader. In Spring 2000 Chris became our Equipment and Logistics Coordinator, managing preparations and equipment for all of Chewonki wilderness trips. Chris is a registered Maine Guide, a USCG Licensed Captain, and holds a Level-Three Avalanche Certification with The American Avalanche Institute. He is an avid outdoorsman and spends his winter weekends on ski patrol at Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley. He also holds a degree in economics and is Chewonki's biodiesel production manager. He lives in Fayette with his wife Aimee and their son, Thatcher.
Greg Shute has been Chewonki’s Wilderness Programs director since 1991. Prior to that he was assistant director of Environmental Education. Greg received his B.S. in Outdoor Recreation from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1982. A Registered Maine Guide who serves on the board of the Maine Youth Camping Association, Greg is chairperson of the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Trip Leader Program and a founding member and co-president of the Maine Wilderness Guides Organization. His wife, Lynne Flaccus, is Chewonki’s head naturalist.
Dick Thomas, started at Camp Chewonki as a 12-year-old camper and has almost never left since! Dick was a camp counselor through high school and college, and upon graduating from the University of Maine in 1980, became Chewonki's first Development Director. In 1987, he became Camp Director, a post he held until 2005, when he became Chewonki's Alumni Relations Director and Chief of Staff. Dick lives in Wiscasset with his wife, 16-year-old son, Colton, and 3-year-old daughter, Sadie. He is past-president of the Maine Youth Camping Association, a former vice-president of the American Camp Association New England Section, former president of the Wiscasset Congregational Church and past and no doubt future, local baseball coach. He enjoys family, his dogs, travel, friends, and all things Chewonki.
Edward Tittmann has been Chewonki's Chief Financial Officer since March 2008. He has a long history with Chewonki, first coming as a camper in 1980, counselor in the late 80s, and trip leader in the early 90s. After Chewonki he spent two years in Colombia as an English teacher and journalist, coming back to New York City in 1993. He received an MBA from Columbia University in 1998 and spent the following eight years at International Asset Transactions, a boutique securitization firm in New York, where he rose to Managing Director. Edward lives with his wife Amy and step-son Gabriel.
Katie Tremblay has been on Chewonki’s Outdoor Classroom administrative staff since 2002. She graduated from the University of West Florida with a B.A. in English and professional writing and from Lesley University’s Audubon Expedition Institute in 2001 with an M.S. in environmental education. Katie is a Registered Maine Guide, Wilderness First Responder and Lifeguard. She is an enthusiastic naturalist and has studied ecosystems all over the United States as well as in Mexico and Canada. Along with her administrative duties, she continues to lead our extended sailing and canoeing trips.
Genell Vashro’s enthusiasm for leadership development in the natural environment is what led her to a career as Girls Camp Director at the Chewonki Foundation. Her passion for the outdoors has drawn her to the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota, Oregon, and Alaska, where she led extended trips for teenage boys and girls, college students, and adults. Genell graduated from Lewis & Clark College with a major in environmental studies. Her recent professional life has been dedicated to programs that support positive changes for youth in their communities.
