Chewonki President Willard MorganWillard Morgan is the president of Chewonki Foundation. He moved into the position of president after six years as head of Chewonki Semester School. While at Williams College, Willard conducted field research as part of his major in Geosciences. After a number of years working in the mountains for Outward Bound and other organizations, he resumed his studies in the Field Naturalist Program at the University of Vermont, where he earned a master's degree. Before coming to Chewonki, he directed the Williams College Outing Club and served as a lecturer in the Rubenstein School of environment and natural resources at UVM. At Chewonki, Willard continues to study and explore the natural world on adventures with his wife, Jenn Barton, and their young daughter, Sierra.

 

Garth AltenburgGarth Altenburg is Chewonki's fifth boys camp director and has a long history with Chewonki starting in 1988, when he participated in the Mistissini Canoe Expedition. He received his B.S. in elementary education from Skidmore College in 1995, and his master's degree from the University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service. Garth is president of the Maine Youth Camp Foundation and serves on the board of the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust. In 2010 he completed the annual Leadership Intensive with the Institute for Civic Leadership. He and his wife Heather live in Cape Elizabeth and enjoying spending time with their three children: William, Benjamin and Phoebe.

Abby Burbank, Camp Chewonki for GirlsAbby Burbank is director of Chewonki Camp for Girls. Her background includes a significant career in athletic coaching of girls and women, 17 years of leadership and training experience at Camp Wyonegonic in Denmark, Maine, and a variety of other leadership experiences. Abby grew up in Brunswick, Maine, and began attending camp herself at the tender age of 5. She is a graduate of Williams College, where she received a B.A. in American Studies and Art. She holds a master's degree in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith College. Her professional background includes extensive time as a college lacrosse coach. She competes in downriver and flat-water canoe races and is a restorer of wood and canvas canoes. She is a challenge course facilitator, Maine Trip Leader, ACA Canoe Instructor Trainer, and American Red Cross Instructor Trainer.

Ann CarsonAnn Carson has been an independent school science teacher and administrator for over twenty years, working in both day and boarding schools. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in botany, Ann combined her interest in science and the outdoors by working as a whitewater river guide before earning her master’s degree in environmental education from the Audubon Expedition Institute. As a science teacher, she’s taught both in traditional classrooms as well as in the field, taking her students into the wilds of the desert southwest, the Florida Everglades and Baja California by backpack, sea kayak and canoe in order to explore each area’s natural history. Most recently, she has taught environmental science and served as sustainability coordinator and dean of the faculty at the Fountain Valley School of Colorado. In her free time, Ann can be found gardening or exploring natural areas with her husband, Steve Kerchner.

Betta Stothart ConnorBetta Stothart Connor, has been Chewonki's director of communications since 2002. She started her career as a journalist at Maine Times, an award-winning issues-based newspaper covering the state of Maine. After which time, she became marketing director at Fresh Samantha Juices where she helped expand the company's reach down the eastern seaboard of the United States. Betta moved into the nonprofit sector in 1999, when she accepted the role of marketing director for Wolfe's Neck Farm, where she helped develop an all-natural beef program for the Freeport-based nonprofit. Betta studied writing and literature at Sarah Lawrence College, where she graduated in 1987. She won the 2010 Golden Arrow Award for her PR efforts in creating loyalty to Chewonki. She is married to Eric Connor. They have a young daughter Beatrix.

Anna HuntAnna Hunt discovered a passion for outdoor teaching and learning at Chewonki in 1997, working for the Outdoor Classroom and Traveling Natural History Programs. For two summers she coordinated the nature activity for Camp Chewonki for Boys and led wilderness trips. Anna's education includes a B.S. in Environmental Biology from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, Professional Residency in Environmental Education at Teton Science Schools in Kelly, Wyoming, and a Maine Wildlife Rehabilitation license. Anna directed our Traveling Natural History Program from 2002-2011 and is now our director of program support . She enjoys playing outdoors, being creative, teaching in Maine's classrooms, and getting out of the office to lead an occasional wilderness trip.


Ryan LinehanRyan Linehan
is Chewonki’s Summer Wilderness Programs director and provides logistical and management support for all of Chewonki’s wilderness trips. Ryan is a Registered Maine Guide. He serves on the board of Teens for Trails, is a seasoned trip leader, and an avid outdoorsman, with a particular passion for surfing and whitewater kayaking. He and his wife Stacey Linehan co-own a gourmet and catering food business in Wiscasset called Treats.


Lucy HullLucy Hull, Chewonki's director of development, has been on the Chewonki staff since 1997 and is a passionate champion of all of Chewonki's programs. When not in the office, Lucy can be found hiking, biking, skiing, sailing, kayaking or traveling with her husband Bart Chapin. In a former life she built and restored boats, constructed houses and worked as a veterinary technician. Lucy graduated from Bennington College in 1975 with a B.A. in psychology. Lucy’s children, Margaret and Miles Chapin, have enjoyed many Chewonki programs as both participants and leaders.

Greg ShuteGreg Shute came to Chewonki in 1984 as a waterfront director and group leader. In 1991, he became Chewonki’s Wilderness Programs director. Greg received his B.S. in Outdoor Recreation from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1982. A Registered Maine Guide who serves on the board of the Maine Youth Camping Association, Greg is a founding member and co-president of the Maine Wilderness Guides Organization, a member of the Trail Committee of the Maine Island Trail Association, board member of the Hidden Valley Nature Center, a member of the West Branch of the Penobscot River Advisory Board, and a member of the Steering Committee for the Keeping Maine's Forest's Initiative.


Edward Tittmann Edward Tittmann has been Chewonki's chief financial officer since March 2008. He has a long history with Chewonki, first coming as a camper in 1980, counselor in the late 80s, and trip leader in the early 90s. After Chewonki he spent two years in Colombia as an English teacher and journalist, coming back to New York City in 1993. He received an MBA from Columbia University in 1998 and spent the following eight years at International Asset Transactions, a boutique securitization firm in New York, where he rose to Managing Director. Edward lives in Freeport with his wife Amy, his step-son Gabriel, and his new baby Paloma. He serves on the board of Wolfe's Neck Farm.

Katie Tremblay, OC DirectorKatie Tremblay has been on Chewonki’s Outdoor Classroom administrative staff since 2002 and now serves as its program director. She graduated from the University of West Florida with a B.A. in English and professional writing and from Lesley University’s Audubon Expedition Institute in 2001 with an M.S. in environmental education. Katie is a Registered Maine Guide, Wilderness First Responder and Lifeguard. She is an enthusiastic naturalist and has studied ecosystems all over the United States as well as in Mexico and Canada. Along with her administrative duties, she continues to lead our extended sailing and canoeing trips. Katie lives in Gardener with her husband Diano and their young son, Nolan.
