The Chewonki Sustainability Office was established in 1992 with the writing of a teachers’ guide on solid waste management. In 1994, we worked in collaboration with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Gulf of Maine Aquarium, and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve on The Wild Gulf Project, an environmental initiative for the Gulf of Maine. Since then, this Office has taken on a number of new projects, and our campus has become a regional model for sustainability. In 2009, we were honored with a Climate Champion Award from Clean Air -- Cool Planet.
