In 2008, Chewonki became the proud new owner of Debsconeag Lake Wilderness Camps. The camps are exquisitely situated on Fourth Debsconeag Lake in the heart of Maine’s North Woods. Situated within the Debsconeag Lakes Wilderness Area, the camp is part of a vast protected wilderness that lies roughly between Greenville and Millinocket. The camp itself sits on a beautiful, protected, wooded shoreline that provides privacy, abundant wildlife, and endless opportunities for exploration, discovery, and fun!
Debsconeag Lake Wilderness Camps is situated on the site of Chewonki's new girls camp. The girls camp runs from June through mid-August and is closed to business during that time. However, we invite guests to join us in the spring and fall seasons.
We are situated in an exquisite chain of lakes and ponds designated and permanently protected as an ecological reserve. The old sporting camps on Fourth Debsconeag Lake date back to the early 1900s when then Vice President Theodore Roosevelt visited the region with his family to hunt bear.
Our camp sits at the base of a magnificent set of granite cliffs that rise 800 feet from the lake, surrounded by a mature forest of pine, spruce, hemlock, maple and oak. A short hike to the top of the cliffs provides views to the north of Baxter State Park, including mounts Katahdin and Doubletop, and to the east of First, Second and Third Debsconeag Lakes. The area is home to an enormous variety of indigenous mammals, reptiles and amphibians, including moose, deer, bear, fisher, otter, turtles, salamanders, and, of course, loons.
Recreational activities in the area are abundant:
- Explore the forest and granite ledges that surround the rustic cabins and waterfront.
- Hike nearby trails for views of Baxter State Park
- Hike on the nearby Appalachian Trail
- Explore Nesuntabunt Mountain
- Canoe for an afternoon or take an overnight trip.
- Fish for togue and native brook trout
- Learn about the area’s rich natural history
- Swim in the clear, deep, pristine lake.
- Relax and enjoy the tranquility of the North Woods at its very best.
